Innovator’s Challenge

Share something you've made that reconnects us to nature at our next event! Here are some ideas...

Connect

Help others emotionally engage with nature.

  • Can you make something to feel another animal’s heartbeat from far away?
  • Can you make something to experience ultraviolet light like bees or birds?
  • Can you make something to experience hearing like an owl?

Inspect

Measure, track, or analyze the natural world.

  • Can you make a biosensor that measures water quality?
  • Can you make a camera trap that takes pictures of life in your backyard?
  • Can you make a hummingbird feeder that records when feeding occurs?

Protect

Sound alarms or notify others when animals or plants are in trouble.

  • Can you make a way to help birds avoid collisions with glass windows?
  • Can you make a system to notify a ranger of illegal activity on a San Diego nature reserve?
  • Can you make a system to detect bark beetles on vulnerable trees?

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of projects can be submitted?

Anything that bridges technology and nature in a positive way. Also, your project should have something you can ‘show’ – a prototype or a demonstration. It can be software or hardware!

Why should I submit my project/idea?

Anyone chosen to do demonstrations at our event will receive TWO free tickets, have the fun of sharing what they’ve made with the public, and may become eligible for other prizes yet to be determined.

Who can submit ideas?

Anyone! Really, honestly, if you’re reading this, we’d love to hear more about your project.

When is the event?

The next Tech to Reconnect will be August 18th.

Does my project need to be fully completed? Or super amazing?

Not at all! We welcome simple prototypes, finalized products, and everything in between.

What would make a good idea?

Concepts with clear connections between technology and the natural world are best. If you are looking for more inspiration, you can try researching animal senses, learning more about building apps or games, or thinking about what you could make that relates to the natural world.

What if I have questions?

Send us an email, we’d be happy to answer! We’re also happy to give feedback on your ideas or specific projects.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes! If selected to share at the event, you’ll get two free tickets so a friend, family member, or co-creator can join you. If more friends and family would like to attend, they can purchase tickets .
